HOCUS FOCUS (continued)
Okay, so, what the hell does deleting apps on my phone have to do with surviving a wildfire, a toxic (or unfulfilling) job and/or… pretty much everything else?
How does this help me change my life, so that work is a slice of my life and not my whole life?
(^Hold onto that.)
Fair warning: I might sound like a white girl at the height of Black Lives Matter.
But it does make a difference.
Do you trust me?
I’m using that audacious, white woman-like privilege of perspective that comes with living outside of the United States.
Bare with me, but believe me, everything ain’t sweet.
But degrees of separation provides its own vantage point.
Small choices, in small doses, change everything.
So, how’d it go yesterday?
Do you know your screen time metrics?
Do you know what apps you’re using the most and why?
Did you set time limits?
Are you an Olympian who deleted all of your apps from your home screen?
Why does this matter right this very moment?
Because it changes how you see, make, and keep time.
That’s the purpose of focus—not being organized or disciplined.
Those are outcomes.
Shonda Rhimes says, time is not money, time is life.
Screens eat time for breakfast—and when you’re navigating any change that disturbs your emotional balance, the last thing you need as a constant companion is a screen.
I know. I know you’re sick of hearing it.
But you have to make your screens work for you.
If you don’t, imagine it this way: screens eat life for breakfast. 😨
Aside from intentional app selection, I don’t allow myself to watch videos online before 2 PM. Reading is fine—videos? A no no. Mama Candace has to be strict with baby Candace. No TV before 2 PM. No YouTube on my phone at all.
Content-wise, I save videos I want to enjoy later into a list I call “my TV channel.” I don’t have any streaming services. I curate my own cable, essentially—and while I don’t believe in ‘video podcasting’ (I’m a snob), I add some to my list anyway. That’s a rant for another day.
What about you?
What have you noticed about the presence of video content in your life?
What would you like to change, so that it brings you more joy or more clarity on the changes you’re making to live a fuller life?
Be back tomorrow to check on you. I love you.
